Ranking the UC Schools – While rankings are somewhat subjective, based on reputation and objective statistics, I’ve sorted the UC schools into four tiers. The first tier is UC Berkeley and UCLA, They’re the most selective and generally the most well-regarded of the UC schools.

Non-UC colleges that would be in this tier include University of Notre Dame, Georgetown University, USC, and the University of Virginia, The second tier is UCSB, UCSD, UC Davis, and UC Irvine, Their US News and Forbes rankings, average GPAs, average standardized test scores, and admission rates are all very similar.

It would be difficult to definitively rank one ahead of the others. Non-UC colleges that would be in this tier include Boston University, Tulane University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and University of Wisconsin-Madison, The third tier is UC Santa Cruz and UC Riverside,

• UC Santa Cruz probably has a better reputation and is ranked higher by various publications, but these two schools are pretty comparable in terms of test scores and acceptance rates.
• Non-UC colleges in this tier would be University of Colorado-Boulder, University of San Diego, Florida State University, and University of San Francisco,

The fourth tier is UC Merced, UC Merced is not necessarily trying to directly compete with the other UC campuses. It’s the newest UC campus and has a significantly smaller enrollment than all the others. It also has the highest percentage of underrepresented minorities and low-income students of all of the UCs.

It’s heavily invested in providing access to education to students in the San Joaquin Valley of California and offering a UC education to more California residents. I created a table with my rankings of the UC schools. Also, I included their US News rankings for National Universities and their overall Forbes rankings.

Basically, I averaged the US News and Forbes rankings to determine my own.

What are tiers? In medicine, mental health, and now in education, there are three generally accepted levels of prevention for various disorders or problems. Each of these levels represents ways that professionals can intervene in order to diminish problems in their clients.

Here we will describe each level without technical jargon, and relate them to our purpose in schools, particularly focusing on student behavior. Most often these three tiers are graphically represented in a triangle diagram. However, these tiers may also be represented as concentric circles. The tiers may help prioritize the type and intensity of interventions for behavior that students receive.

It is possible that any particular intervention can be used at any of these three tiers. What we have done on this website is identify the primary way strategies would be used. Tier 1. The first level of intervention, called primary or universal prevention, is often called Tier 1 intervention in schools. Primary level interventions are delivered to all students, and attempt to undertake modifications in the environment or system which prevent behavior or mental health problems from developing.

• All students benefit from Tier 1 interventions in school.
• When Tier 1 interventions are implemented well, potentially fewer students will need additional services.
• Character education, a curricula intended to help all students understand and commit to behaviors that align with core ethical values, is an example of a Tier 1 intervention.

Tier 2. The secondary level of interventions in schools (now commonly called Tier 2) focuses on specific students who show initial signs or symptoms of difficulty. Data from these students is then used to provide targeted interventions to those “at-risk” students based on their specific needs and symptoms.

Signs may include behavior management problems in class, tardiness, office referrals, absences, etc. In a total school population, it is estimated that 15 percent of students, might develop some form of behavioral difficulty and require Tier 2 supports in addition to all Tier 1 supports. Check-in/Check-out, a strategy used to monitor student progress and provide positive daily contact with an adult in school, is an example of a Tier 2 intervention.

Tier 3. Tertiary level interventions (Tier 3) focus on rehabilitation and minimizing the risk of recurrence of mental health problems or behavioral episodes for students who have already experienced one or more behavioral crises. These supports are the most intensive and resource dependent, and thus are reserved for the approximately 5 percent or less of students who do not respond to Tier 1 and 2 interventions.

Again, students receiving Tier 3 supports must also receive all appropriate Tier 1 and Tier 2 supports. Conducting a functional behavior assessment (FBA) to determine the events preceding and following problem behavior, which is then used to create an individualized behavior plan, is an example of a Tier 3 intervention.

These three tiers of prevention, which inform interventions in schools, represent a useful framework for understanding how we can prevent behavioral crisis and make schools safer. Implementation of effective interventions at each of these three tiers would also prevent or diminish the need for physical restraint and seclusion.

High school seniors are just now starting to hear back about admissions decisions for the 2023 fall semester. While we don’t have data on the current application cycle, The Chronicle analyzed historical admissions data to see how UCLA and Berkeley have grown more competitive over time.

The difference in admissions rates between the two schools is actually wider among in-state applicants. For the 2022 fall semester, Berkeley admitted 14% of California residents, while UCLA accepted 9% — a five percentage-point difference. Though UCLA has had a lower in-state acceptance rate than Berkeley since 2015, data going back to 1994 shows a constant back and forth between the two schools over which was less likely to grant admissions.

The data also shows that both school’s admission rates have plummeted in the last three decades, with UCLA’s rate falling more dramatically than Berkeley’s in recent years. Between 2011 to 2022, UCLA’s rate dropped from 23% to 9% for California residents, while Berkeley had a more modest decrease, from 18% to 14%.

Among the other undergraduate UC campuses, Irvine and Santa Cruz had the biggest declines in acceptance rates during the same time period. Irvine is now the third most selective UC, having admitted 18% of in-state freshman applicants in 2022. San Diego ranks fourth with a 24% admit rate. Overall acceptance rates at other top universities in the state also decreased in the last decade, with some schools now twice as competitive than previously.

The University of Southern California’s admit rate fell from 23% in 2011 to 12% in 2022, and the rate at Pomona College, a liberal arts school in southern California, decreased from 14% to 7% over the same time period. Even Stanford University, which admitted just 7% of applicants in 2011, nearly halved its rate to 4% by 2022.

Still, UCLA had the biggest change among top California universities over the 11 years. UCLA is now harder to get into than Berkeley and USC and close to surpassing Pomona College. UCLA’s selectivity is likely a result of an increasing number of applications and the likelihood that admitted students accept their spot at the school.

Since 1994, UCLA has always had more applicants than Berkeley. But in recent years, the difference in applicant pool sizes has widened substantially. For the 2022 fall semester, UCLA received about 22,000 more applications than Berkeley. The previous year’s difference was almost 27,000.

But according to application data for every California high school, UCLA is almost as popular as Berkeley among Bay Area residents. About the same number of high school seniors from the nine-county area applied to UCLA as Berkeley in 2022 — roughly 23,000 of them.

And while it was harder to get into UCLA, Berkeley’s 59% enrollment rate — the share of admitted students who enroll in the fall — was slightly higher than UCLA’s (51%). Across all accepted applicants, UCLA’s enrollment rate was 50% last year, the highest it’s reached over the 29 years for which we have data.

It’s higher than Berkeley’s rate for the 2022 fall semester (46%) — and neither school made significant changes to its freshman class size. With more students opting to enroll at UCLA, the admissions office must admit fewer students in order to maintain a certain class size.
