These are spotted as pillars poking out on platforms from the lake surface. The first should be visible southwest from the Lake of Rot Shoreside Site of Grace. How do I stop being eaten by Astel?
First of all you can tell it’s coming when he teleports but the gate appears close to you and not on the other side. You should be rolling towards him not away from him so you end up under him as he goes for you. Quickstep/Bloodhound Step makes it easier. Alternatively you can use a summon, so he goes for it instead. If it is an NPC summon it will only deal 1 damage and not even grab them. or fight him near wall, he doesnt do death grab move then. You get behind him or you pray you can stagger before it happens Yeah i ended up going with the wall strat, though it’s double edged as you’ll have little space to dodge an AoE. I ended up trading with him (well my mimic finished him off after i died) but it still counted, somehow. I’ll take it though, i got myself a cool new spell 🙂

How do you progress through the Ainsel River?
Ainsel River Main – If you are progressing along Ranni’s questline and have picked up the doll, make sure to sit at the site of grace and select the “Talk to Ranni” option at the bottom over and over until you start getting repeated dialogue. Ranni asks you to kill the Baleful Shadow, which is a specific enemy you will fight later on in Ainsel River.
Going further down the left path leads to the dead-end waterfall north of Ainsel River Well Depths, so there isn’t much down there and you have to go through the Naturalborn. You can get directly behind where it is, and either just run further into the ruins avoiding it, or go behind and smack it in the head to kill it.
- Continue through the tunnel, following the river down to the lower area.
There will be more ants in these tunnels, including some winged ones that fly around to attack you. In the open cavern, the path splits, with a path going to the left that leads to the big cavern with the Naturalborn and merchant from the Well path. Keep following the river to the right to continue towards Nokstella.
- Continue down the path and through the doorway to the right to reach Nokstella.
- Just down the steps, you can find the next site of grace.
Where to go from Ainsel River Main?
Nokstella, Eternal City Walkthrough: How to Beat Baleful Shadow – The path from Nokstella Waterfall Basin to Baleful Shadow isn’t of particular interest, aside from a few Smithing Stones, but if you want to progress Ranni the Witch’s quest, then you should spare a moment to Talk to Miniature Ranni before taking it.
Baleful Shadow isn’t a particularly challenging fight: it’ll often pause after big wipes of its sword, and you can backstab if you’re nimble enough. This can be a long fight as Baleful Shadow will replenish health with flasks, but keep your guard up and whittle away at its health to get the Discarded Palace Key, then push on to the Lake of Rot to activate the Site of Grace,

How do I get to Baleful Shadow from Ainsel River Main?
How to get to Ainsel River and get the Miniature Ranni Doll – Next, you’ll need to make your way to Ainsel River to continue the quest – but not via any method you have had access to so far. 
Go to Renna’s Rise in Three Sisters, which is the tower to the north of Ranni’s Rise that was previously sealed by a barrier. Climb the tower, grab the Snow Witch set from the chest half way up, then take the teleporter at the top to get to a new area deep in Ainsel River. 
When you’re here, pick up the item ahead of you by the coffin, the Miniature Ranni Doll. 
Rest at the nearby Site of Grace and speak with the doll. You might be met with silence at first, but persevere, and the doll will speak with you on the third attempt. This opens up the next section of the quest, where you have to scour the underground caverns for another lost city, Nokstella, and the Baleful Shadow, an enforcer of the Two Finger’s hegemony.
