In Elden Ring, players must navigate The Lands Between as the Tarnished and defeat a number of Shardbearer bosses to become Elden Lord. It’s no secret that FromSoftware, the same company that produced Dark Souls, is excellent at including bosses that are incredibly difficult to defeat.
When it comes down to it, there is really nothing in Elden Ring that’s easy, and the first boss that players must defeat to progress through the main storyline, Margit the Fell Omen, is no exception. Margit the Fell Omen is first encountered when trying to access Stormveil Castle and is infamous for being an incredibly difficult boss, especially for so early on in the game.
He’s so difficult, in fact, that FromSoftware ended up adding Margit’s Shackle to the game, an object that helps players bind him briefly enough to get a few more hits in without dying. That being said, this difficult fight is actually the perfect start to the game, for it helps players learn several crucial lessons about the structure of Elden Ring ‘s boss fights. 
For many, encountering Margit the Fell Omen as the first main boss is a wake-up call. Like the other bosses in the game, he is incredibly difficult to defeat. Unlike other games, Elden Ring does not hold back or ease players into the game’s bosses. Margit the Fell Omen is ruthless, and his phase two magic is just as lethal as his phase one melee attacks.
And, to add insult to injury, players must constantly worry about not falling off the edge of the narrow bridge that the battle takes place on, for doing so means certain death and having to start the fight all over again. That being said, Margit the Fell Omen’s attack style has one important thing in common with that of the other bosses in the game: it can be studied and, if studied enough, predicted.

In response to a rant regarding Margit the Fell Omen’s difficulty, Reddit user datenhund said that Margit the Fell Omen teaches players “not to get greedy, not to get too far, heal at the right moments” and even remarks that the infamous boss is “easily the least forgiving first boss of any FROM souls game.” Datenhund makes many valid points.
An issue that some Elden Ring players have when it comes to boss battles is that they overestimate how much time they have to respond between attacks. Especially since heavy hitting bosses can easily stagger players and prevent them from attacking for several crucial seconds, it’s vital that players learn early on how to manage their time and resources.
