What is the fastest crossbow in Elden Ring?
S-Tier –
Full Moon Crossbow: Generally considered to be the best crossbow in Elden Ring, and one of the best ranged weapons overall, the Full Moon Crossbow is certainly worth of an S-ranking. Though it has the lowest damage output of all Elden Ring’s crossbows, only causing 50 points of physical damage per hit, the Full Moon Crossbow also causes 50 points of magic damage with each successful shot. This 50/50 damage split makes the Full Moon Crossbow extremely helpful when it comes to taking down foes with a weakness to magic, However, this extra damage does come at a cost, with the crossbow requiring a pretty lofty Intelligence stat of 14 to wield properly. Pulley Crossbow: The Pulley Crossbow is one of the hardest hitting weapons in its category, with a base damage stat of 65. However, on top of this great damage output, the Pulley Crossbow has a pretty substantial trick up its sleeve: the ability to fire three arrows at once. If all three arrows land at once, that’s a minimum damage output of 195, which can only get higher with upgrades and better arrows. Throw in the Kick weapon skill, and the Pulley Crossbow is one of the best ranged weapons in Elden Ring, as it has a surprising amount of versatility.
How big is a Ballista Bolt?
The ballista. – In terrain such as found in Britain, the larger catapult and slingshot type weapons were too cumbersome and heavy to transport to a battle site. So the Romans invented a smaller, easily conveyed, effective weapon. The ballista, which was basically a giant crossbow and indeed developed on the same principle of firing iron tipped bolts towards the enemy positions.
This was a smaller weapon than the catapult type of artillery that fired huge rocks into enemy positions and destroyed the walls so the infantry could gain entry. The ballista was used to kill and injure the people within the fort, rather than damage the surrounding walls. The construction of the ballista was similar to the Roman bow.
The flexible arms that projected from each side at the front were made from layers of thin wood strips. These layers were constructed in such a way that the grain of the wood in a layer was at an angle to the layers on either side. If you have ever seen plywood, you will know the principle.
- These strips were then glued together to form a flexible yet strong weapon.
- From the end of each end strands of twisted or platted rope hung loosely.
- This rope would be pulled back by an artillery soldier using a winch fitted to the weapon.
- Because of the huge forces involved, a winch had to be employed as no human could ever pull back the rope by hand alone.
The rope was then secured by a locking shaft at the back of the ballista. A bolt or large stone was placed in front of the rope and a length of strong cord attached to the shaft was pulled to release the missile. The ballista came in a range of sizes with arms anywhere from 2ft to 4ft ( 60cm to 120cm ).
- Using reconstructed small baliistae, a 1 pound ( ½ kg ) missile could be fired at least 300 yards ( 275m ).
- The larger ballista was capable of hitting a wall up to 550 yards ( 503m ) away.
- This was far outside the range of enemy bowmen who could only fire the arrows to a distance of about 110 yards ( 100m ) The ballista was brought to a predetermined distance from the target.
It was loaded with a 3ft ( 100cm ) bolt or a large stone and aimed just above the walls. It was then fired with deadly effect. The projectile would either hit an enemy warrior, or land in the compound impacting on anyone in the way. The speed of the missile was phenomenal.
- When it arrived at the target it was usually traveling at about 115mph ( 184kph ).
- Anyone in the way would not have stood a chance.
- A bolt would have gone straight through a human body or impaled the victim against a wall.
- Even if it hit a limb, whoever was hit would have been disabled or even had their arm or leg bone shattered.
The rocks fired would certainly have taken off a head without any problem. If they hit someone, the effect was horrific with the body ripped apart and the internal organs splattered for yards around.

Which is better ballista or catapult?
What is a Ballista? A Ballista is an ancient military siege engine in the form of a crossbow. Typically it was used to hurl large bolts, and had better accuracy than a catapult at the expense of reduced range.
We chose the name “ballista” for this project because we too are attempting to accurately “hurl projectiles” at software in an attempt to expose robustness failures.(Click on thumb-nails to see full-size gif images.) A Ballista A Stone Bow Ballistae being used in a Siege Pictures adapted from: The crossbow: mediaeval and modern military and sporting, its construction, history & management with a treatise on the balista and catapult of the ancients and an appendix on the catapult, balista & the turkish bow, by Sir Ralph Payne-Gallwey (1848-1916), New York : Bramhall House, 1958.
PLEASE NOTE: We don’t have anything to do with siege weapon information, plans, construction, or any other related activities. We just used the word “Ballista” as a cool name for a computer software project! So please don’t ask us for plans on how to build a siege weapon – we can’t help you with that. : What is a Ballista?

How much does a Ballista Bolt weigh?
the kind you can see pictures of Romans using.(arbalest or scorpion) everything i can find does not list any weights. if you know where to find that info can you link it? Gamewise, a balistia is explicitly a upsized crossbow. Apply weight increases for size increases as normal. I’m surprisingly unable to historical weight information beyond projectiles (exceeding 25kg/55 pounds). I don’t think there is a listed weight. But since a Light Ballista is “essentially a Huge heavy crossbow” (from the description of the Ballista), you could extrapolate the weight from a Heavy Crossbow. The ‘Armor for Unusual Creatures’ Table tells us that Huge armor should weigh five times its normal weight.
- So if that is the same for weapons then a Light Ballista should have a weight of 40 lbs, the same as a huge Heavy Crossbow.
- Quote: This column gives the weight of a Medium version of the weapon.
- Halve this number for Small weapons and double it for Large weapons Quote: This column gives the weight of the armor sized for a Medium wearer.
Armor fitted for Small characters weighs half as much, and armor for Large characters weighs twice as much. Should be the same. I might add some extra weight for the mounting stuff ect, but 40 pounds seems like a good baseline and as close to rules as written as I know. Well, Ultimate Combat says that the ammunition for a light ballista weighs 10 lbs per bolt. A normal bolt for a crossbow weighs 1/10th of a pound. So extrapolating based on this, we could say that a light ballista is 100 times heavier than a crossbow, so probably 400 lbs for a light ballista if it’s an upscaled light crossbow or 800 lbs if it’s an upscaled heavy crossbow. You generally don’t see weights because they aren’t portable. So are you a cloud giant or taller? Then you can move a light ballista. If you’re not as tall as a cloud giant, you either have it bolted to a wagon or a castle wall, in which case the weight isn’t an issue. I could see a group containing a telekineticist wanting to know how much one weighs to see if it can be handled by Telekinetic Haul as an alternative to the wagon. a light ballista can be operated by one person. it says its a large weapon. i need the weight to see if it can be mounted on an animal companion with out causing the beast to have a heart attack or buckling under the weight.
light ballista heavy ballista there is ones much bigger then those two. 1 person marked this as a favorite. Floating disk wants to know, because flying artillery turret LOL As a general rule, two-hand weapons are one size category smaller than the appropriately-sized wielder, one-hand weapons are two size categories smaller, and lights are three size categories smaller. A light ballista is size Large. At a minimum, the creature carrying it needs to be Huge. IF you co by the core rulebooks suggestion that a ballista is essentially a heavy crossbow sized for a Huge creature*, and use correct scaling (1 size large is double in all dimensions, so 8x weight not 2x), that puts a Huge crossbow at 64x the weight of a medium one.
Medium heavy crossbows are 8 pounds, so the Huge crossbow/ballista would be 512. (Similarly, if you apply the same scaling to the bolt, you get one that weights 6.4 pounds). If you stick with a 10 pound ballista bolt (100x the weight of a heavy crossbow bolt), that would suggest an 800 pound ballista (100x heavy crossbow weight).
*Both deal 3d8 damage, 120 foot range increment. I know it is a different game system, but supplements for GURPS are generally somewhat well researched (unlike D&D/Pathfinder, which just slaps a number on paper that sounds good), at least the low tech ones. - As a GM, I would not allow it to be mounted on an animal companion smaller than size Gargantuan without a significant penalty on the attack roll.
- The best-case scenario for most PCs would be to have it on wheels with the animal companion pulling it.
- That is wrong.
- Quote: A weapon’s size category isn’t the same as its size as an object.
Instead, a weapon’s size category is keyed to the size of the intended wielder. In general, a light weapon is an object two size categories smaller than the wielder, a one-handed weapon is an object one size category smaller than the wielder, and a two-handed weapon is an object of the same size category as the wielder.
Crossbows can be fired 1 handed (though at a penalty). That would suggest that a crossbow is one size category smaller than that of the intended wielder, not the same size. So a crossbow intended for a Huge creature is itself a Large object. Which is what Ultimate Combat says a light ballista is. I can’t say exactly buy I’m almost positive it’s less than a heavy ballista.
#almosthelping This is what I get for going off memory instead of looking it up. As mentioned here for your Dwarven engineer, a ballista is not a particularly mobile piece of equipment. And as for your question here, regardless of weight, it need to be stable to shoot (so anchored to the ground, on a ship deck, a wagon or a fortification wall) and the back of a mount would not provide a stable/solid enough “anchor” point for it to be shot. We have mounted ballista-like weapons on the back of war elephants before. So there is a real world precedent for the same concept. Recent threads in General Discussion
