History – Prior to developing the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE), Rockstar Games, and primarily its Rockstar North studio, mostly used Criterion Games ‘ RenderWare engine to develop games for PlayStation 2, Windows, and Xbox, such as the early 3D installments in the Grand Theft Auto franchise.
In 2004, Criterion Games was acquired by Electronic Arts, which led Rockstar Games to switch from RenderWare, and open RAGE Technology Group as a division of Rockstar San Diego, RAGE Technology Group started developing what would later become RAGE, based on Rockstar San Diego’s previous Angel Game Engine (AGE).
The first game to use the engine was Rockstar San Diego’s Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis, released for Xbox 360 on May 23, 2006 and ported to the Wii more than a year later. Since then, RAGE integrates the third-party middleware components Euphoria and Bullet, as character animation engine and physics engine, respectively.
On seventh generation consoles, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, RAGE often saw a disparity in the optimization on the hardware: major titles on PlayStation 3 usually had lower resolution and minor graphic effects, as in Grand Theft Auto IV ( 720p vs.640p), in Midnight Club: Los Angeles (1280×720p vs.960×720p) and in Red Dead Redemption (720p vs.640p).
Despite its problems in optimization equality, in July 2009, Chris Stead of IGN voted RAGE as one of the “10 Best Game Engines of Generation”, saying: “RAGE’s strengths are many. Its ability to handle large streaming worlds, complex A.I. arrangements, weather effects, fast network code and a multitude of gameplay styles will be obvious to anyone who has played GTA IV,” Since the release of Max Payne 3, the engine supports DirectX 11 and stereoscopic 3D rendering for personal computers,
Max Payne 3 also marked the first time in which RAGE was capable of rendering the same 720p resolution on a game, both on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. This benefit has been achieved also in Grand Theft Auto V, which renders at a 720p resolution on both consoles. For the remastered versions of Grand Theft Auto V, RAGE was reworked for the eighth generation of video game consoles, with 1080p resolution support for both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One,
The PC version of the game, released in 2015, showed RAGE supporting 4K resolution and frame rates at 60 frames per second, as well as more powerful draw distances, texture filtering, and improved shadow mapping and tessellation quality. RAGE would later be further refined with the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018, supporting physically based rendering, volumetric clouds and fog values, pre-calculated global illumination as well as a Vulkan renderer in the Windows version.

We don’t know much else about the new version of the RAGE engine at the moment but if what Klippel says is accurate, we could be looking at the best looking GTA game to date. After it was quietly announced back in February of this year, we haven’t actually heard very much about GTA 6, whether that be its setting, release date, or main characters.
All we know so far is that development on GTA 6 is “well underway” and that it probably won’t release until before the end of 2024 – as Klippel revealed previously. That doesn’t mean that there haven’t been a number of rumours surrounding the mysterious project though, as a number of leaks have shared things such as that GTA 6 will reportedly stick with a modern setting, that the game is apparently Rockstar’s “most chaotic” project yet, and that it could feature “large-scale destruction.” What exactly that means, however, is still unclear.

The goal is to make GTA 6 is as realistic as possible.
Finally, we were told that GTA 6 will most certainly not disappoint. Matheusvictorbr has built a solid reputation for leaking correct information when it comes to Rockstar titles. Most recently, he shared with us some new info on GTA 6, GTA Online DLC, and a GTA 4 remaster as well as the prices and release dates of the physical versions of GTA V: Expanded and Enhanced well before they were officially revealed. Over a hundred moves would be captured in each day of production. The final product was taken from different performances by different actors to make them appear seamless and appropriate. For the gameplay and animations, the team redid a lot of the work from previous games, wanting Grand Theft Auto IV to “feel next-generation”. The role-playing elements from San Andreas were removed fairly early in development, partly due to the animation work it would have required, and because consistently needing to visit the gym felt antithetical to Niko’s motivations.
- The game’s targeting system was one of the first focuses of development due to the advanced technology; the team wanted it to feel realistic without being too technical.
- The cover system was a “natural addition” to the targeting.
- Benzies described the multiplayer as the hardest part of the game’s development.
The team wanted the multiplayer to feel like an extension of the cinematic single-player experience. Dan Houser described it as “a section of a film rather than the whole narrative”. The developers considered adding co-operative multiplayer to the main story campaign, but decided it worked better as a single-player experience.
- When Sam Houser first showed interest in using the Euphoria software in the game, he was told that it would be impossible or only limited to cutscenes, but some members of the team were able to make it work.
- Engineers from NaturalMotion worked on-site at Rockstar North for several months at a time to incorporate Euphoria software into the game.
Rockstar also worked with Image Metrics for the game’s facial animations. The facial rigs had around 100 joints, with a total of 300 minutes of facial animation. The scale of the project caused some issues for the animators, forcing them to have rigs completed before animation began.
They also faced difficulty in the direction of the actor’s head—either straight on when looking at the teleprompter, or down when looking at a script. Image Metrics head of production David Barton noted that “having realistic eyes is 90 percent of the battle”, as it allows the player to believe the character.
A head camera was used when recording to capture facial movements. SpeedTree was used for in-game environment rendering.

Now, the massive GTA 6 hack appears to confirm this. It only makes sense for Rockstar Games to go back to what worked in Red Dead Redemption 2 and improve on it. Apparently, there’s an interesting name in one of the lines of code. Tobias Kleanthous is currently an “Animation Expert of Production R&D” at Tencent.
Before this, Kleanthous served as the “Lead AI/Gameplay Programmer” at Rockstar Games for over seven years. According to his LinkedIn profile, Kleanthous explained that he gave a presentation about the realistic horses in Red Dead Redemption 2 at GDC2021. SO, it’s safe to say that he had a lot to do with Red Dead Redemption 2.
Kleanthous’ name appears in the leaked GTA 6 build and people who saw the illegally-released footage claim that the NPC bumping interaction is very similar to Red Dead Redemption 2. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to put two and two together, and make an educated guess about GTA 6 using an updated version of the Red Dead Redemption 2 RAGE engine. Experts believe that the recent GTA 6 leak just set the game’s release date back by at least a year. After Rockstar Games announced GTA 6 in February, we haven’t heard much about it since. The closest thing we have to an official announcement is Take-Two Interactive saying that it will “set a creative benchmark” in the entertainment industry.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a 2020 action role-playing video game developed by CD Projekt Red and published by CD Projekt, Set in Night City, an open world set in the Cyberpunk universe, players assume the role of a customisable mercenary known as V, who can acquire skills in hacking and machinery with options for melee and ranged combat.

What did Rockstar say about GTA 6 leak?
Admits company was hacked, expects live services to continue without disruption. Rockstar has acknowledged the enormous Grand Theft Auto 6 leak of work-in-progress development materials that took place over the weekend, In a statement published this afternoon on Twitter, as the company returned to work, Rockstar admitted it had suffered a “network intrusion” – a hack – from which the early development footage of GTA 6 had been taken.
- Rockstar said it hoped the hack would have no impact on its live services – such as GTA Online – and insisted the leak would not impact the development of the game long-term.

Our work on the next Grand Theft Auto game will continue as planned and we remain as committed as ever to delivering an experinece to you, our players, that truly exceeds your expectations.
We will update everyone again soon and, of course, will properly introduce you to this next game when it is ready. We want to thank everyone for their ongoing support through this situation.” GTA publisher Take-Two saw shares fall six percent in premarket trading in response to the hack, Reuters reported today.
Take-Two itself acknowledged the hack in an SEC filing, in which it wrote it had “already taken steps to isolate and contain this incident”. Yesterday’s leak was unprecedented in scope, with a stunning amount of material now out in the public domain.
Rockstar’s lawyers have been busy scrubbing as much as possible from the internet, though after a quick check this afternoon, Eurogamer was still able to quickly find copies of yesterday’s leaked footage doing the rounds – with nearly an hour’s worth of video available in total. Prior to Rockstar’s confirmation that the footage was legitmate, the sheer scale of the leaked footage and the amount of work on show all but verified it to be real.
At the same time, details of the leak also appeared to line up with what had been reported previously – that GTA 6 will star a pair of protagonists akin to Bonnie and Clyde, and that the action would take place in and around a modern day Vice City (the franchise’s equivalent of Miami).
- An individual believed to be behind the hack – who also claimed to be responsible for last week’s intrusion into Uber’s servers – previously posted that he was willing to “negotiate a deal” with Rockstar over the leak of further information.

The GTA 6 Map Will Probably Be Larger Than GTA 5’s – Even before the September 2022 leak, Grand Theft Auto 6 fans had already been wondering about the size and extent of the game’s map. Most speculations centered around Vice City, which, as the leaks confirmed, will again feature as the setting for a GTA game.

A visual rendering similar to this was provided by user stdggy on Imgur. What all of this means, according to jumbo04, is that GTA 6’s map exceeds GTA 5 ‘s Los Santos map significantly.
The GTA 6 map will measure 206.8 square kilometers, or 79.9 square miles; GTA V, by this user’s calculations, was only 31 square miles, making the possible GTA 6 map a full 2.5 times greater in area. The methodology used is sound, as are the conclusions, which would mean that players can anticipate a much bigger map than they have encountered in previous franchise games.
