How much did Elden Ring sell?
One Year Later, ‘Elden Ring’ Announces 20 Million Copies Sold Elden Ring FromSoftware We are just days away from the first anniversary of Elden Ring, but ahead of that milestone, Bandai Namco has come out to that the game has sold 20 million copies in its first year of release.
“The companies would like to thank everyone who has played this game from the bottom of their hearts, and will continue to develop various ways for the fans to enjoy the world of Elden Ring in the future,” a statement from Bandai Namco and FromSoftware said. The Game of the Year winner has dramatically outperformed every other FromSoftware game in history by a wide margin, it’s been noted, took four years to announce it had reached 10 million sales.
Last figures for other FromSoftware games include 5 million Sekiro sales, 5.5 million Dark Souls 1 sales and just 2 million Bloodborne sales, though there are some platform restrictions there which Elden Ring did not have. That said, Elden Ring is simply on another level here.20 million copies in a year isn’t quite enough to land it on the best-sellers of all-time list just yet, but it’s approaching the last reported figures of games like the original Modern Warfare 2 (22.7 million sales), Red Dead Redemption (23 million), God of War (23 million) and GTA IV (25 million).
It’s pretty wild, especially since the base difficulty of FromSoftware games always made them somewhat of a niche, even if they were critically acclaimed and beloved by fans. Elden Ring FromSoftware The question on everyone’s mind now is whether Elden Ring is getting DLC or a full-on sequel, but we still have answers to neither, despite this anniversary.
Elden Ring has continued to get balance patches, and received a fairly large PvP update, but it has yet to even announce potential DLC a year after release here, even though nearly all major past FromSoftware games have gotten DLC, most of it released by now.
We know that FromSoftware’s next big project is a new Armored Core game, which will hew closer to the principles of that series, rather than just being sci-fi Elden Ring, or something like that. But it does stand to reason that with the sheer level of success we’re seeing here from Elden Ring, that DLC should be coming, and FromSoft has hinted as much about future content.
And Elden Ring 2 seems like a sure thing, even though that’s no doubt years and years away, and there would be no point announcing it any time soon as a result. Truly a monumental achievement from FromSoftware here, a studio that no doubt has earned a massive megahit by now.

Why did Elden Ring sell so much?
What Makes Elden Ring successful? – While games like Dark Souls and Demon’s Souls pioneered the genre of “soulsborne/souls-likes”, Elden Ring has taken it to the next level. It takes everything these games did – brutal difficulty, memorable boss fights, top-notch level design – and expands on it.
It also offers players an unprecedented level of freedom when it comes to FromSoft titles. With an open world, a trusty steed to travel on and a non-linear story, players can tackle the game in any way they choose. These factors all lead to the game receiving high review scores, and becoming an instant game of the year contender.
But there was a significant amount of hype surrounding this game before release too. Credit: Bandai Namco FromSoft’s last dark fantasy title was Dark Souls 3 in 2016. They did release Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice in 2019, but that game was drastically different to what came before. Fans of the Dark Souls aesthetic and gameplay were eagerly awaiting what the company would do next.
There was a lot more building up to this game than previous FromSoft titles, and the marketing was always on-point – never showing too much of the game while giving us enough info to get us excited. It all culminated in one of the biggest game releases in recent years, and these seriously impressive sales numbers,
Fans are now anxiously awaiting a DLC announcement. It’s safe to assume we will get DLC, as most FromSoft games get additional content. Hopefully we don’t have to wait too long! Elden Ring has now sold more than Dark Souls III and Sekiro combined, according to industry analyst Daniel Ahmad. I think what’s most impressive is that Elden Ring has already sold more than Dark Souls III and Sekiro combined, based on the latest figures from both titles prior to Elden Ring’s release.
https://t.co/C06GoFZQ97 — Daniel Ahmad (@ZhugeEX) November 15, 2022 Elden Ring is the best-selling game of 2022 in the US so far, and it is expected to sell better than Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and finish the year as the best-selling title in America, Elden Ring launched in February, while Modern Warfare II came out at the end of October, so the comparison is not fair.
The game is not just a commercial success, but a critical win as well. It’s up for Game of the Year at next month’s Game Awards, where it’s also nominated for six other awards, including Best Game Direction and Best Narrative. The products discussed here were independently chosen by our editors.

How well has Elden Ring done?
‘Elden Ring’ Is Already The Best-Selling Game Of The Past Year Besides ‘Call Of Duty’ Elden Ring FromSoftware While FromSoft games are always beloved by critics and fans, and do end up selling well, Elden Ring has hit new heights that even fans may never have thought possible.
- We are now talking about Elden Ring sales in Call of Duty terms, as has revealed just how well the game has sold since release.
- Elden Ring is not only the best-selling game of 2022, besting the likes of Horizon Forbidden West and Dying Light 2, it’s the best-selling game of the entire past 12 months with one exception, Call of Duty: Vanguard, at least in the US.
It’s a monumental achievement for a brand new IP, even one coming from a developer as beloved as FromSoftware. Something about Elden Ring has crossed a line bringing in new players where previously, they may not have played the likes of Dark Souls, Bloodborne or Sekiro.
- Elden Ring can still be extremely difficult, but feels more approachable than past games, with some comparing it to an upgraded version of the exploration of an Elder Scrolls-type map.
- Elden Ring is one of the best-reviewed games of the past decade, its 96 Metascore in truly rarified air that only a select handful of games in history have reached.
The prevailing thought is that it is likely the best the best-reviewed game of the year, even if Starfield and God of War Ragnarok do make it out in 2022, and it’s an easy frontrunner for GOTY consideration, where the “official” award will be given out at the Game Awards in December.
- Horizon Forbidden West Sony I feel a tiny bit bad for Horizon Forbidden West, another great, well-reviewed game that became instantly overshadowed by Elden Ring just a week later, when the exact same thing happened with the first game and Breath of the Wild.
- That said, the NPD numbers show that despite Elden Ring’s overall lead, Horizon Forbidden West is at least the #1 game on PlayStation platforms, where it is an exclusive release.
Like Zero Dawn, it seems likely to have long-tail sales that will keep it healthy for probably the entire PS5 generation, and a third game is almost certainly on the way a few years from now. We have not heard anything about an Elden Ring sequel. Normally would imagine that it would be a sure thing, given this kind of performance, but Hidetaka Miyazaki does his own thing, and every interview I’ve seen from him seems to indicate that making Elden Ring took a whole lot out of him.
So no, I’m not sure we can say for sure Elden Ring 2 is on the way at some point, though obviously there are hundreds, if not thousands of hours of playtime to be had in this initial game, given its size and different playthrough styles. We’ll keep an eye on its performance from here. Follow me, and,
