Elden Ring From A Hundred Ways To Play – While certainly there are multiple builds in Souls games, they all have a somewhat familiar cadence combat that is brutally punishing, given that it’s almost entirely melee based.

Here, the introduction of three main trees of magic open up a huge chunk of the game to dramatically different playstyles than previous games, and ones you are not locked into with the ability to respec your character to go down different paths a short way into the game (uh well like, 50 levels into the game, which is short in the grand scheme of things).

1. Save Points Are Everywhere – You will generally no longer find those massively stretches of time between checkpoints where you go through an entire section of a Souls game and lose all your materials when you die unless you trek all the way back to it.
2. In 50+ hours so far, I’ve found those very, very few of those sections and have permanently lost very few runes (essentially the game’s equivalent of XP).

Past games in this genre could often feel like you were standing in place, not making progress because of the difficulty, but I’ve simply never found that here. And if you do run into a difficulty wall you can always justleave, go explore somewhere else on the vast map, and come back when you’re ready.

Elden Ring FromSoftware You Can Farm Up – Speaking of being ready, farming has been present to at least some extent in past FromSoftware games, but it’s a lot more potentially prevalent in Elden Ring, meaning you can overlevel for a lot of fights rather than needing to get through them purely by never making mistakes close to 100% of the time.

I’ve run into many situations where I’ve found enemy clusters to farm for a few levels here and there, and if you really want to farm up, there are guides for the highest yield spots on the map to give your character big boosts (you especially are going to want to invest in Vigor/Health as a new player).

It’s As Much Of A Mystery Or A Walkthrough As You Want – I would absolutely recommend playing as much of Elden Ring blind for as long as you can, as that’s part of the charm of the map, figuring out all the unexpected places and dungeons and puzzles you’ll find. But with that said, the game can be cryptic to the point where you can miss a lot of stuff with a totally blind playthrough, including breaking some quests if you don’t do them right.

The good news is that at this stage, the online guide industry has you covered with walkthroughs of every major and minor landmark on the map, or the locations of the best weapons and armor. While I am not going through all of those myself, at this point, after doing so much myself, the ability to look up the odd puzzle solution or spell location here and there is helpful.

• But if you want total hand-holding for the duration, that’s there for you too, no judgement (well, no judgement as long as you don’t post about it on Twitter).
• Just buy it.
• I can almost promise you will not regret it, and that’s coming from someone who was a skeptic at the start.

How do you start an Elden Ring for beginners?

What to do first in Elden Ring – First things first, it’s best to establish where you have to go on the critical path – and that’s Castle Stormveil. You’ll discover this when you light the first Site of Grace – think of these resting points as Elden Ring’s bonfires – with the light emerging from the top pointing you in the direction you must go next. If you want some bitesize dungeons next, then it’s worth exploring some local caves. Again, you’ll need a torch before setting off, and the bosses inside – Demi Human Chief, Beastman of Farum Azula and Erdtree Burial Watchdog among them – offer a healthy challenge and some decent rewards. Though you are warned against visiting Agheel Lake to the east from several characters, it’s worth skirting around the outside and heading along the river to the north. After an invasion, you’ll want to visit Patches, who has an item which can help you with a critical path story boss very soon. It’s also where you can purchase a Stonesword Key – allowing you to access specific locked areas. The lake is also where you can find our recommendation for the best weapon in the opening hours, the Twinblade. Chances are you’ll need to increase your stats to equip it, however – our Rune farming methods might help here. If you want to cast magic in particular, then it’s worth finding a staff location,

Where to find the Twinblade in Elden Ring.

Whichever weapon you choose, it’s worth finding some Smithing Stones to upgrade. There are two locations in Limgrave we’d recommend to visit – a mine-like dungeon north-west of the lake, or a troll-covered field in nearby Stormhill, not far from Castle Stormveil. Finally, there are some Flask upgrades within reach to help you heal better – and if you are happy to get some help in battle, searching for some summoning spirits won’t hurt either.

At this point, you should have access to a good weapon, a levelled up character, and a greater understanding of how things work. The above points just scratch the surface of what Limgrave has in store – let alone the rest of the game, most of which is technically accessible from the off if you know where to go.

A hybrid Dexterity and Intelligence build is arguably one of the strongest builds in all of Elden Ring since you get the power of sorcery and the physical damage of Dexterity, as well as the benefit of having a very fast casting speed as well. You’ll be limited to smaller melee weapons since you won’t have much Strength, but that’s not a huge deal, especially if you get good at parrying and dish out some big crit damage with daggers.

Like other melee and magic hybrid builds, you’ll also want a good amount of Vigor and some Mind for HP and mana, respectively. You’ll also want to find yourself a strong weapon that scales with both Dexterity and Intelligence. These aren’t super common, but you’ll find several of them by exploring thoroughly.

Moonveil, for example, is an incredibly powerful Dex/Int weapon you can find by defeating the final boss of the Gael Tunnel dungeon in Caelid.
