Players in Elden Ring frequently push themselves to find the limits of what the game can handle. Sometimes this is hitting the actual rune cap of the game, sometimes it’s finding the absolute best build for every boss. And sometimes, as is the case with Redditor Noraje_, it’s demonstrating the power of the Samurai.

1. Rather than a detailed argument, Noraje_ used a video for evidence showing their Samurai taking down the first boss of the game, a Grafted Scion, using its starting equipment.
2. This is impressive for a couple of reasons.
3. The first is that the Grafted Scion is meant to be a scripted loss at the start of the game.

On a starting playthrough, very few players can bring it down, even knowing what to expect. The second reason is that not only does Noraje_ take down the Scion, but they also take it down easily using the Samurai. Utilizing the skill Unsheathe and a couple of well-placed jumping attacks, the Samurai staggers, bleeds, and destroys the Scion.

All of this without even resorting to the Samurai’s other weapon, the bow. It’s so one-sided it’s almost enough to convince players that the Samurai could beat the final boss of Elden Ring alone and unaltered. The Samurai does objectively have a lot going for it as a starting class, with good armor, a light shield, and a very powerful starting weapon: a katana.

Balanced in speed and strength and with the aforementioned Unsheathe skill, plus a starting longbow, there’s a lot to love. Granted, sometimes Unsheathe makes things go horribly wrong, but that’s mostly in PVP situations. It’s certainly an inspirational video for anyone hung up on the starting Grafted Scion fight and a useful advocation for the Samurai as a starting class.

One thing taken for granted (or known but the more scummy sort of “Veteran” who wants you to fail so neglect to mention it on purpose) aspect of confessor. They are one of the only two classes to start with a 100% physical shield, the other is Vagabond.

• Which if you say, take samurai for his solid longbow + katana start, his shield takes a lot of chip damage even from trash with daggers.

Prophet is fairly rough if you are unfamiliar with the series because even though it comes with a nice heal with a side of light fire, you will need to USE that heal spell a lot more than a confessor would. So you pick prophet if your big priority is “but my spreadsheet build for level XX needs every last per point optimization!”.

1. Confessor is a smoother start.
2. Low faith of 12-15 can also be useful if you do not dedicate yourself to faith casting, as that will give you access to the rot (the new toxic) cure incantation.
3. So yeah, if you are unsure in general.
4. Confessor is a solid choice.
5. Vagabond does not start with any spells, but with 9/9 int faith.

EDIT: but confessor has 9 int as well. Prophet has 7. But, if you want to START with arcane wizard spells rather than faith, then you would probably enjoy one of the “has INT spells” classes more. Also do not take for granted starting gear. even in this game, especially in this game, “get better gear” is very luck of the draw or taken for granted you are playing with a guide open in your lap.

• And it can be a bastard nabbing a solid 100% normal shield in a hurry if you are not basically following a guide.
• And drop rates are horrifying in this game.
• I’ve killed a million zillion generic brass shield soldiers and have only 1 brass shield.
• While I am swimming in “dismounter” curved greatswords from less common enemies).

You really want to get vigor up to 20 minimum sooner rather than later for Margit and cutting down “one shot by early game dragon”.30 minimum before or after Godrick, then most likely 40 minimum for the softcap on gains. Vigor gains also ramp up, you get about as much HP for vigor 20-30 as you do vigor 1-20.

41 is when it drops from 40+ hp to 20+ hp again.60 is the hard cap where it goes “♥♥♥♥ you, you only get +6 hitpoints per vigor now”) Mind also ramps up awkwardly if you want to cast regularly without using a lot of blue drinks. it only gives you +3 up to 20 mind (100 total FP), then it starts giving you +6 FP for a while.

so leveling mind is very disappointing at first, even if you need the extra FP. endurance, everything takes so much ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stamina that isn’t r1 swings, you want 20-25 at least. (25 is an initial dip in equip load gains, from +1.6 to +1.0 for a while).

And gear is arbitrarily heavy as usual. cloth bandages weigh more than leather gloves because ♥♥♥♥ you. I guess. a cloth bandanna over your mouth weights 3.0 while a metal helmet weights 3.3 because reasons. etc. As another odd note. some of the “confessor church” brand incantations need a combination of int+faith.
