The Short and Sweet Answer to Elden Ring Boss Parrying – Yes, you can parry some monsters, although often just the smaller and more human-shaped bosses. Some bosses and minibosses are parryable, especially those with humanoid shapes (but not all of them, though).

Whilst we wait for a comprehensive catalog of enemies that can and can’t be parried, it’s a matter of trying and failing. Sounds scary. How to defeat Malenia, Blade of Miquella – While she can be a very agile opponent, Malenia approaches you at a walking pace to begin with, meaning you have plenty of time to summon a spirit, neck a potion like a Flask of Wondrous Physick before you properly clash. 
This is a particular downside to bringing allies with you since this potentially means more opportunities for her health bar to stay topped up, so coordination is paramount. Her frightening attack power is balanced by the fact that she has low poise so her attacks can easily be interrupted, though you preferably want to stagger her before she even begins her attack animation. 
Her attacks can also be parried, but be warned i t takes three successive parries to stun her for a riposte, so this tactic isn’t recommended unless you’re incredibly confident with your parry timings. A few attacks that you need to watch out for, one is her charged thrust that has a huge range but which takes a couple seconds to charge so you can usually anticipate this and dodge roll under it.
The other is a grapple which has a much smaller window to react as she pulls her arm back before reaching out to grab you. If caught, she’ll throw you up in the air then impale you on her sword, which will in all likelihood kill you right away. A high-level spirit caught in this attack will however survive it.
The most deadly attack Malenia has occurs once you’ve taken her health below 75%. She will leap in the air, hold for about a second and then home in on you with a vicious flurry of attacks that deal enough damage to kill you. And if it doesn’t, then she follows up with a second flurry, and then a third, which finishes with a small stationary AOE flurry. 
To avoid the first part, if you have a spirit ally, there’s a chance she will home on them instead, and a high level spirit will survive the successive attacks (although this will also mean Malenia regains a good chunk of health). If she’s coming for you however, then you can try to run away, but you have to anticipate it otherwise she will almost certainly catch up to you and you’re dead.
- The better tactic is to have a shield with high guard boost and a high stamina gauge, and you will be able to block the first part of this attack.
- You should still have some stamina left to then dodge roll the next part of the attack, and if you still get caught in the attack, these won’t be nearly enough to kill.
We’ve also found that it’s actually possible for a heavy attack with a high reach to stagger her out of this attack phase, but the chances of this are very slim so we wouldn’t recommend it as a strategy, unless your summoning spirit pulls it off. When you get her health down to zero, don’t congratulate yourself just yet.

What level should I be to beat Radagon?

To make the experience as painless as possible, aim to be around level 150, with at least 40 points invested in Vigor to avoid getting one-shotted.
Going into the fight with a leveled-up Spirit Summon can make a world of difference. You want something beefy enough to draw aggro and survive a few hits from Radagon while you regroup and refill HP. Per usual, the Mimic Tear Ash is a reliable choice, even post-nerf. (Note: If your Spirit Summon dies here, it won’t be around to help with the follow-up boss.

For Radagon’s attacks, there are only a few to watch out for, but any of them can be lethal if you aren’t focused.
Lightning Spear is an attack that sees Radagon chuck a large spear toward you which later explodes. You can jump over this or dodge to the side but stay away from it until it explodes later. There is another similar attack to this where he will throw five lightning spears in a fan pattern, sometimes repeating the process twice, but you can dodge through this to get some attacks on Radagon.
One of the big attacks to avoid is his grab, where Radagon will materialise his missing arm before grabbing and pinning you down while smashing the hammer down several times. Using Black Knife Tiche – or any other suitable summon – will come in handy here for avoiding this move, as getting grabbed can be a death sentence due to the damage.
The rest of his moveset is quite simple. Charge Swing is a move that causes Radagon to charge toward you and swing his hammer, but you can dodge into the move to avoid it and get some hits in. Lastly, there is the Jump Ground Slam, where he will hover in the air for a moment before lunging down toward you, dealing AoE damage.
Make sure you utilise your Elden Ring Smithing Stones before this fight so your weapon will deal the max damage.
Can you parry tree sentinel?
Melee Strategy – In and Out: Wait for Tree Sentinel to finish an attack and get in a quick hit or two before rolling away to avoid the follow-up. Allow it to approach you again and repeat. A good shield can help buy you time to escape, especially since many of its attacks have substantially different timings so learning how to dodge them all is challenging.
- Once it enters Phase 2, be sure to preserve enough stamina to run away and roll when it starts winding up a Shield Crush.
- Shield and Poke: Any weapon with a thrusting light attack, such as Short Spears or Rapiers, can be used while guarding.
- Stand to Tree Sentinel’s right and a little towards its hind leg, so that some of its attacks swing over your head and miss.
Stay as close as possible, keep your shield up whenever possible, and poke with thrusting attacks. You’ll still get hit sometimes which will drain your stamina, but the gaps between its attacks tend to be long enough for you to recharge your stamina. Only lower your shield in order to close distance.
This strategy allows you to avoid learning dodge timings except for distance-closing moves like Charging Attack and Leap Attack. Once his health bar reaches 25%, you can summon Lone Wolf Ashes to whittle down the remainder of its health. Parries: Almost all of Tree Sentinel’s most frequent attacks are parriable, but the timing is tricky for many of the normal Side Swings.
The easiest way to defeat it with parries is to learn the timing for Charging Attack and Leap Attack specifically, then stand a ways away to bait those. Once you land a parry, hit it with a charged heavy attack and then back off to provoke another Charging Attack or Leap Attack.

Margit is a major difficulty spike from the bosses you’ve fought before. We recommend that you level up a few times and get your weapon to +2 before facing this boss. Getting some good spirits and maybe even a co-op partner isn’t a bad idea, as Margit’s attacks are difficult to read.
- Similar to the bosses you’ve fought before, Margit is susceptible to critical hits once his poise is broken, so a flurry of melee attacks or heavy jump attacks can stagger him with ease.
- It’s also possible to bleed Margit, removing large chunks of his health bar when his bleed gauge is filled.
- We aren’t sure if he’s particularly weak to bleed, but he’s susceptible to it so we’ve mentioned it in the table above.

T here’s a lot of debate over whether Elden Ring is FromSoftware ‘s best soulsborne, but what’s certainly true is that it is by far the studio’s most flexible RPG.

But my favourite new mechanic in Elden Ring is Guard Counters. These are weapon-specific ripostes designed to be used when equipping a shield. Press the attack button immediately after an enemy strikes your shield, and your character will unleash a powerful counterattack that has a high stun chance, letting you close in for a devastating critical strike.
- I like Guard Counters for several reasons.
- To start with, they make using a shield much more fun and reactive than in any of the Dark Souls games.
- They’re also useful for dealing with annoying enemies that like to windmill you with quick attacks, such as the puppets that prowl areas like Caelid and Liurnia, and the imps that harass you throughout the game’s many subterranean tombs.
But my favourite thing about Guard Counters is how they prep you for mastering the trickiest mechanic in any FromSoft game – parrying. 
Elden Ring. Credit: FromSoftware. For those who don’t know – parrying unlocks the easiest route through any FromSoft RPG – if you can master it. Like Guard Counters, parrying involves tapping a button at a specific moment during an enemy’s attack. Only this time, you’re tapping the block button as the enemy attack is about to hit you.
Get it right, and you’ll instantly open your foe up for a critical strike. Get it wrong, and you’ll have a nice big chunk shaved off your health bar. My relationship with parrying in FromSoft games is turbulent to say the least. I got a good enough handle on it in the original Dark Souls, but muddled through Bloodborne with a highly intermittent parry.
Sekiro saw the height of my parrying prowess, though only because I had no choice but to learn it. Elden Ring is by far the most I’ve struggled with parrying, to the point where I all but gave up on using it. Then I started experimenting with Guard Counters, and realised how they are essentially designed to prime you for learning to parry.

Credit: FromSoftware Once you feel confident enough to start experimenting with parrying, Guard Counters are always there as a fallback, particularly if you’re using your shield to parry as well. Muck up your parry a couple of times while fighting a boss or a tough enemy, and you can revert back to blocking and countering until you feel comfortable lowering your guard again.
It’s worth noting at this point that Guard Counters are not simply parrying on easy mode. Everything comes with a price in Elden Ring, and the price for using Guard Counters is that they are slightly slower than parries, with a brief window of vulnerability between the block and the counter. This means it’s still possible to take damage if your opponent recovers from the block quick enough (or if you’re fighting multiple foes at once).
Also, unlike parries, Guard Counters are not guaranteed to stun your opponent. It may take several attempts to trigger a stun depending on their posture stat. 
Elden Ring. Credit: FromSoftware Nonetheless, Guard Counters do help to make Elden Ring more accessible, which is indicative of the game’s broader design thrust. Elden Ring is all about giving players as many tools as possible to help them defeat the game’s legion of tough and tricky opponents, but without artificially turning down the game’s difficulty.
FromSoft’s design ethos has always been about meeting its challenges head-on. But over the years the studio has become better at ensuring that the toolset is broad enough to accommodate as many people as possible with viable routes through the game. Guard Counters are ultimately just a small part of this, but they are also, arguably, the most interesting.
