In-game ads and cross promotions have popped up in all manner of games from Call of Duty to Need for Speed.
But not Grand Theft Auto. Why? It would seem like if a game breaks every entertainment sales record on the planet, you might want to be part of that, but either brands want no part of the GTA series for the firestorm it would bring down on their companies as soon as cable news got a whiff of the partnership, or simply because Rockstar won’t have them.
But if either is the case, one company is getting a bit of free, very prominent advertising in GTA 5, Dodge. Namely, the Dodge Charger, which is directly tied to Franklin’s character for most of the game. Cars in the Grand Theft Auto universe are often direct rip-offs of existing cars in the real world, or sometimes hybrids of more than one.
- I’ve seen Porsches, Land Rovers, Audis, Lamborghinis and any number of other autos that have very obvious real world equivalents, despite their new satirical names.
- Many other brands are also satirized in the game other than automakers such as the iFruit ( ), LifeInvader ( ) or Bleater (Twitter), though none are portrayed in anything approaching a positive light.
But cars? It’s a different story, particularly for Franklin’s Charger. The three main characters of the game, Michael, Trevor and Franklin, each have their own cars. Yes, you can acquire new cars in the game through thievery and store them at a garage, but the cars each characters owns from the start are directly tied to them.
- No matter what happens to the car, be it flipped upside down under a freeway overpass in a failed race attempt, or at the bottom of the ocean after a police chase, it will eventually reappear at their house.
- Michael has a car that is eventually taken away after a plot turn in the game, so it’s no longer linked to him.
Trevor has a beat up old pick-up whose make and model can probably only be identified by a few. But Franklin? Even before he’s a multi-millionaire thief, his personal whip is a brand new Dodge Charger. Of course it isn’t called that, rather the game deems it the “Bravado Buffalo,” but it’s obvious to anyone who has seen both cars that it’s directly based on Dodge’s muscle car, and you can even see a little altered version of their red ram logo on the rear bumper.
As it is the only car Franklin legitimately owns, it has a special place in the game and you’ll be using it frequently. Given that it’s the only ride guaranteed to always be at his house, it’s smart to make it one of the first cars you sink a lot of money into for upgrades. I dropped probably $50,000 taking it from stock muscle car to street racing monster, and it automatically became my favorite car to drive in the game with incredible handling and blinding top speeds.
If that’s not positive brand association, I don’t know what is. I would love to know if Dodge had any secret hand in getting their Charger to the front and center of GTA 5. I doubt it, as they wouldn’t want to risk the negative press, and Rockstar probably wouldn’t want to be seen as playing brand favorites, but Dodge has been given quite a gift here.
Outside of controlling the three leads on foot, I’ve spent more time in the Charger than any other car in the game so far, and I bet that’s probably true for a significant portion of the 20M+ who will end up owning GTA 5 at some point. The Charger’s competition like the Ford Mustang and Chevy Corvette also appear in the game as bizarro world versions of themselves (called the “Dominator” and “Coquette” respectively), but none are directly link to a lead character like the Charger.
