LilAggy is a well-known Souls game speedrunner who has held world records for multiple categories in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, (Via TheLoadout,) The speedrunner’s most recent accomplishment is beating Elden Ring in a total time of 59 minutes and 38 seconds.

To accomplish this, LilAggy spent 14 hours streaming and managed to utilise several skips to cut through as much of Elden Ring as possible, eventually beating the final boss in a straight fight. Earlier this week, another speedrunner, nico bellic, beat Elden Ring without dying in just over two and half hours.

The route used needed to be carefully planned to ensure that the required number of runes and upgrade items were collected as efficiently as possible. This allowed nico to efficiently defeat all the required bosses and beat the game without a single death.

Then there’s Twitch (opens in new tab) streamer and YouTuber (opens in new tab) Bushy, who’s beaten the game “somewhere around 100” times while chasing the weirdest, hardest challenge runs imaginable.

You may know Bushy from the hitless run (opens in new tab) he posted shortly after Elden Ring came out. You might think that beating a From Software game without getting hit by a single enemy would be the most impressive thing on his channel, but you’d be exceptionally wrong. Bushy has turned challenge runs into a science.

He makes playing Elden Ring wrong look easy, and makes it extremely fun to watch. Bushy’s most recent challenge runs focused on purposely getting hit by every attack and only using the shoddy equipment obtained through NPC questlines. He’s beaten the game – that is, killed all the main bosses – without spending runes, while suffering from Scarlet Rot constantly, with an equip load of zero, at twice the game speed, with twice the enemies, and with every enemy replaced by Malenia.

No resting, legendary weapons only, fists only, kicks only, flaming hugs only – there are dozens of challenge runs on his YouTube alone, and the themes and rules are off-the-friggin-walls. His most popular video is about one-shotting every boss in the game, and it’s a particularly great example of the kind of batshit alchemy that goes on behind the scenes to make these absurd challenges doable.

I reached out to Bushy to talk about why and how he puts himself through these exceedingly restrictive challenges. He explained that most challenge runs only take him 12 to 20 hours, though some, like the reset-heavy hitless run, can take far more. He did actually play Elden Ring normally at first, but after two 80-hour standard playthroughs, he’s done nothing but wild challenges. I look at the wiki to try to come up with restrictions that will make fun runs,” he says. “I do have a master list so that I don’t forget any ideas that I come up with. I don’t usually poll viewers, but sometimes I get a comment that seems like a fun challenge run and will add it to the list of potential runs.

I’m having fun doing them for now, challenges just seem like a good way of making games more fun for longer periods of time. I’m currently working on some challenges for God of War Ragnarok, but I don’t think there’s as much challenge run potential there.” Bushy says his favorite clear is a toss-up between his one-hit run and the hitless run.

“The restrictions give so many interesting problem solving opportunities,” he notes. As you’d expect, the hitless run is also among his hardest challenges, but it’s far from the only brutal one. “Kick only was also very difficult; the max damage on a kick is about 25 so boss attempts took a long time to complete,” Bushy explains. In a strange way, Bushy’s herculean efforts can even be motivating for players who are struggling to play Elden Ring normally. “With two enemies in the room their move potential is so much more unpredictable than even the hardest standalone boss. And when it comes to these difficult challenge runs, predictability and control is everything. But this begs the question as to whether these completion rates really mean Elden Ring is the easiest Soulsborne game or even an easy game overall. Indeed, some of the data management for player achievements for Elden Ring can either be confusing or misleading. For instance, while some achievement-tracking sites may show that as many as 20% of players have reached the Elden Ring achievement (which means all achievements have been unlocked), usually this is because sites default to showing percentages of their own users, who are often more hardcore players.

The reality is that only about 6% of Steam’s total Elden Ring players have actually achieved this particular goal. Nevertheless, the stats on Steamhunters and PSNProfiles suggest that many players who have progressed in Elden Ring have enjoyed slaying demigods with relative ease.

The 29-minute ordeal sees Iron Pineapple striving to beat FromSoftware’s latest without a single attack, worming their way through the game via a combination of exploits and Ash Summons.

And yes, they actually do manage to beat Elden Ring without dealing a single attack. The entire video is a fascinating exploit of FromSoftware’s game design. Iron Pineapple has to work hard at buffing their Ash Summons, like the Radahn Soldiers, through items like the Commander’s Standard gained through defeating Commander O’Neill, which buffs allied minions.

Magic is the crux of this entire feat, and so the player starts out as a Prophet and never really looks back, putting points into Faith, Arcane, and other magic-related attributes to bolster Incantations which can heal Ash Summons. It’s not just the main story bosses that Iron Pineapple faces off against, though; they also fell tough optional foes like Rykard and Starscourge Radahn.

There are some real points of struggle in the journey, like overcoming Margit the Fell Omen with just a pair of imps and the NPC summon Sorcerer Rogier, but Iron Pineapple is able to pull off the heroic venture and claim victory. This is an excellent teardown of Elden Ring’s remarkably freeform design, and we’d highly recommend watching the journey in its entirety.
